内容简介： This lecture discusses forest management and forest industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina over a long period of time, including the Habsburg Empire (1878-1918); Interwar Yugoslavia (1919-1941) and Socialist Federation of Yugoslavia (1945-1990). It examines different approaches of turning forests into productive areas that helped shape Bosnia and Herzegovina as an “extractive periphery”. As for the age of empires the lecture will focus on the issue of mapping nature through cadastral surveys and building railway infrastructures in order to make distant coniferous forests accessible for exploitation. As for the interwar period it will analyse scientific approaches to dealing with natural challenges to a developing forest industry, namely the handling of infectious epidemics, and the spread of fungus. Finally for the socialist period, the lecture zooms in on the challenges which forestry as a science faced when navigating socialist ideology of workers’ self-management, sustainable forest management and the integration of Bosnian forest products into a capitalist global timber market.
