Yan Dunjie specialized in accountancy in his early years and studied the history of science in his spare time. He embarked on the road of professional research on the history of science after fierce ideological struggle and through personal choice in 1956. He participated in the founding of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, drafting the Institute’s preparation plan and the ten years development outline for the institute’s work and the ten years development outline for the whole nation’s research work of history of science. Over quite a long period, he pushed forward the development of the research of the Institute. However, this road was not always smooth. Before the end of the Cultural Revolution, he was frequently impacted by political movements. Both his academic research work and health were affected. This paper restores the reasons and process by which Yan Dunjie embarked on the road of professional research on the history of science, and discusses his contribution to the establishment of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and its development, while also studying the influence of political movements on him. |
