In 2011 through 2014, the Shuiquangou Iron Smelting Site in Yanqing District, Beijing was excavated, the main features recovered by which were four smelting furnaces and two puddling furnaces, and the artifacts unearthed from these features were mainly pottery wares, coins, raw materials for smelting, fuels, refractory materials, slag, etc. Based on the stratigraphical accumulations, unearthed artifacts and historical
textual materials with the reference of the scientific dating data, this iron-smelting site is estimated to be built in the Liao Dynasty. These completely preserved iron-smelting furnaces and associated operation workshops and residences are all discovered for the first time in Beijing area even the whole northern China and are important materials for the research on the history of iron metallurgy. |
