The gui with horse ormaments unearthed at Jinquan of Taojiang is the only bronze of its kind with this unique shape. There are different understandings of its date and place of production。 Such phenomenon exists commonly in the study of Shang and Zhou bronzes. As they contain such information as art, material and craftsmanship, bronzes shouId be direct materials for the study of the above-mentioned issues. This paper, through the careful extraction of information concerning art and craftsmanship from this gui, sums up the four elements of its stylistic features: the shape of the horses and their trappings, the animal head with long neck as ornament, the relative depressions on the bronze’s high relief inner wall, and its craftsmanship, and hanging bell. By combing through the context, the paper analyzes the method of craftsmanship in expressing these stylistic features. |
