Bo Jue was a famous early 17th century scholar. It is said he was accomplished in various fields, including astronomy, calendrical computation, musical theory, as well as being famous for manufacturing telescopes, cannon and other mechanical instruments. Until recently, it has not been clear whether any of his works were still extant. This paper provides the first study on the newly discovered astronomical works by Bo Jue. Employing several case studies, this research not only explores the connection of Bo’s work with the Chongzhen Lishu, the voluminous astronomical textbook complied by Jesuits in Beijing mainly on the basis of Tycho Brahe’s theory, but also sheds light on the social networks through which European knowledge was shared in the community of Chinese literati. |
