Based on the three major achievements of Hellenistic science --—— the mathematical and mechanical work of Archimedes, the Antikythera mechanismcs, and Alexandria medicine, the paper attempts to show that the interaction between science and technology in the Hellenistic age was much stronger than what we have envisioned. The result of this interaction was the rise of applied theoretical research, especially the development of mechanics. To some extent, mechanics became the “experimental philosophy” both for understanding nature and directing technology in the Hellenistic age. |
